Work to begin soon on Tambaram water scheme

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Preliminary work on the Rs. 32.6-crore Water Supply Improvement Scheme (WSIS) for the Tambaram Municipality will begin soon. Work orders were issued to the private company that bagged the project (IVRCL was the company that executed the underground drainage project in Alandur Municipality) on June 30, senior officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply said.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board started its work on preparing a detailed project report for the scheme in June last year. Tenders were floated in March this year and in April, Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin informed the Assembly that the scheme would be implemented at a cost of Rs. 32.6 crore.

Some of the key components of the project include sinking 13 additional infiltration wells in two villages on the Palar river (in addition to the 10 existing wells), installation of pumpsets, supply lines and Ground Level Service Reservoirs (GLSR or sumps) and overhead water tanks whose combined capacity would be to store an additional 30 lakh litres of water from the river.

At present, the municipality with a population of nearly 1.4 lakh, received only about 60 lakh litres everyday, against its requirement of more than 150 lakh litres a day.

By 2010, its requirement would be around 300 lakh litres, the officials said.

Financial aid

They added that financial assistance for project would come from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation, while the local body too would be contributing its share.
