CHENNAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region and KPMG is working on a ‘skill gap’ study to assess the talent pool demand in the booming logistics sector. The CII has also urged the Centre to accord industry status to the logistics sector. Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, H.R. Srinivasan, Chairman, Logistics 2007 & Vision Holder, Take Solutions, said the study would make an early assessment of the skilled manpower in the logistics sector and make recommendations on how to increase the talent pool. The logistics sector, estimated to be $73 billion, accounted for 13 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product in 2006. It was projected to witness a 25 per cent compound annual growth over the five year period, from 2006 to 2011, to become $15 billion. The share of the organised sector was set to increase to 14 per cent by 2011 from the present six per cent. “India serves as a good base for manufacturing for export of automobile components and pharmaceuticals. The size of the domestic market is getting larger. In addition, sectors such as automotive, capital goods, electronics, retail and telecom are witnessing strong foreign direct investment inflows. It is time the Centre gave recognition to this sector as these developments will lead to increased market opportunities for logistics service providers,” he said. Mr. Srinivasan said improving efficiency and effectiveness was going to be a challenge and would require concerted efforts by all stakeholders, including the Government and the industry bodies. To bring more players into the organised sector to enable them to have easy access to funds, the CII Institute of Logistics is organising the 6th edition ‘Logistics 2007’ on September 20 and 21, 2007. Belgium is the partner country for the event. ‘Powering Growth through logistics, innovation and integration’ is the theme. Exhibition
A three-day exhibition will be held at the Chennai Trade Centre from September 20. For the first time, the CII Institute of Logistics and India Value Fund will present Supply Chain Excellence Awards to the best performing industries on September 18 and 19. Jayant Nadiger, Trade Commissioner, Flanders Investment and Trade, urged the members to use Belgium as a hub to enter European countries.
