Commuters block Chennai-bound trains again

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Chennai-bound commuters continued their agitation against changes in the timings of the electrical multiple units (EMUs) running between Arakkonam and Chennai by blocking the trains at Puliyamangalam, Tiruvalangadu and Kadambathur stations, causing detention and delay of all trains bound for Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore on Wednesday.

The protesters called off their agitation only after the railway authorities agreed to restore the old timings. Ever since Southern Railway changed the timings of the EMUs with effect from July 1, the commuters have been indulging in agitations, blocking trains almost daily on the grounds that the new timings did not suit them as they could not reach their offices in Chennai on time.

When the commuters blocked the trains and gathered in large numbers on the railway track at about 6.30 a.m. on Wednesday, the authorities were forced to detain several trains.
