Cloud-seeding today

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Cloud-seeding operations in the State will begin from July 12. Necessary clearances for using radars and aircraft triggering artificial rain have been obtained from the Civil Aviation Ministry and the green signal from the Union Home Ministry is awaited. The Centre for Atmospheric Sciences & Weather Modification Technologies, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, which is overseeing the scientific experiment, has justified continuance of cloud-seeding this year too.

The centre’s director, I. V. Muralikishna, said, “some rain-shadow areas that actually require rain did not get them. Some mandals in Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy and Nalgonda districts which, indeed, reported excess rain during the recent wet spell, are now facing a deficit.” He told The Hindu that the operations this time also would be undertaken by M/s Agni Aviation. The operations would be conducted for 120 days till November.
