A film festival to stress communal harmony

Manisha Jha

NEW DELHI: The All-India Documentary Filmmakers’ Association (ADFA) is organising a “National Quickie Competition and Film Festival” on the theme of “Sarva Dharma Samabhaav” at Andhra Bhavan here on August 11 and 12. The last date for entry of films is July 25.

The festival will have two sections -- competitive and non-competitive. Theme-related entries in both categories will be screened during the festival. The best filmmaker will be awarded a cash prize of Rs.50,000, a citation and a memento. Those winning the five consolation prizes will be given Rs.10,000 each along with a citation and a memento.

The competitive category invites films of up to five-minute duration. These can be documentary as well as fiction. The non-competitive category, on the other hand, provides a platform for screening films and documentaries which are of more than five-minute duration but are related to the theme.

According to ADFA, the theme of “Sarva Dharma Samabhaav” has been selected to promote national integration and communal harmony through the creative medium of film-making because it believes this is the need of the hour. Said documentary filmmaker and treasurer ADFA Shaadab Muzammil: “The preamble in the Constitution of India defines the ‘Republic of India’ as a sovereign socialist secular and democratic republic. However, in practice we find that all this is not being followed. So through this festival we want to create awareness that India is a country of diverse religions and beliefs and as Indians we should respect each other and their religions.”

A jury of eminent filmmakers headed by K. Bikram Singh will select the award-winning films from the entries received from across the country.

The jury will also include filmmaker Anwar Jamal, Sahara-Urdu editor Aziz Burni and Federation of Film Societies secretary U. Radhakrishna. So far ADFA has received 50 entries and is expecting more. “We have received entries from all parts of the country, but the maximum number have come from Delhi. Most entries have come in from young students pursuing mass communications,” said Ms. Muzammil.
