NEW DELHI: K. D. Tripathi, 80, brother-in-law of the Central Bureau of Investigation Director, Vijay Shankar, was found murdered and his Sainik Farms bungalow ransacked in the Capital on Wednesday. The police suspect robbery to be the motive behind it. The incident came to light around 6 p.m. when Pawan, a gardener working in the adjoining bungalow, noticed the gate of Mr. Tripathi’s house ajar. Suspecting that something was amiss, he informed his employer who in turn called up the police. The police found flowerpots kept along the driveway broken. They found Mr. Tripathi’s body on a chair in the bathroom of the servant quarters. His hands were tied behind and there were ligature marks around his neck suggesting that he had been strangled. The almirahs in the bedroom had been ransacked indicating that after killing Mr. Tripathi, the assailants had searched for something. Initial investigations indicated that when Mr. Tripathi opened the main gate, the assailants tried to overpower him, leading to a scuffle and eventually to the murder. Enquiries revealed that Mr. Tripathi lived in the Sainik Farms house along with his wife. His son lives with his family in the United States, while his two daughters are in the United Kingdom and Sweden. Over a fortnight ago, his son had come to meet him along with his two sons.
