Haneef case drags on
P.S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: Australian authorities on Wednesday defended the prolonged detention of Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef without any charges being brought against him under counter-terrorism laws.
The already-extended and judicially authorised detention was due to expire on Wednesday night but Dr. Haneef remained in detention as the Australian Federal Police sought legal sanction to hold him for a further period of three days. A ruling is expected later in the week.
However, questions have been raised in some political and public-opinion circles in Australia about the delay in laying charges against Dr. Haneef and freeing him.
The response from the authorities was that all avenues of weighing the “material” gathered and questioning him should be fully explored.
