NAMAKKAL: The People Welfare Protection Forum has asked the Highways Department to restore the damaged roads immediately to ensure safe travel.
A resolution adopted at a meeting of the forum said that a number of roads in the district remained in a bad condition for long, which had led to frequent accidents.
The department should initiate immediate measures to restore the roads and undertake periodical maintenance works.
The forum demanded the government to initiate action against dyeing units in Tiruppur, which were letting out effluents into the Noyyal River without properly treating it. The polluted river water enters into the Cauvery River, which is a major drinking water source for the people in Namakkal and neighbouring districts.
Monitor
The government should monitor the functioning of the dyeing units closely and close the units, which did not follow its directions, a press release from forum president S. Perumal has said.
The forum asked the Namakkal Municipality to reduce the water charges and deposit for getting a water connection.
Awareness should be created among people about the Right to Information Act, the release said.
