In the line of fire: Kanna Lakshminarayana, Minister for Transport, on Thursday gets a feel of the Speed Laser Gun.
HYDERABAD: Transport Minister K. Lakshminarayana appealed to vehicle users, to stay within the prescribed speed limits while on the roads and enjoy a safe journey. He was addressing a gathering of transport and police officials, after giving away 38 German Speed Laser Guns - 23 to Transport department for use in the 23 districts and 15 to the police to be used in Cyberabad and Ranga Reddy (4), Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Guntur, East Godavari and Chittoor (two each) and Medak (one). Mr. Lakshminarayana recalled Government’s road safety initiatives since September 2005. He said 4.5 lakh drivers had been trained since then and that with the objective of reducing road accidentssaid With speed guns,the Government wanted to take deterrent actionThe first batch of 38 guns were bought at a cost of Rs. 2.66 crore and more would be procured soon, he said. They had the power to record speeds from a distance of 1.5 km and could capture images of the vehicle with the registration number upto a distance of 250 metres with zoom provision of upto 500 metres. Officials present included Transport Commissioner Ajay Mishra and Additional Commissioner C.L.N. Gandhi, Additional Director-General of Police M. Alagar and Additional Commissioner, Traffic V.S.K. Kaumudi.
