ANANTAPUR: Students led by Telugu Nadu Students’ Federation (TNSF) staged a dharna in front of the DEO’s office here on Thursday protesting the Government’s decision to close Government schools by citing the reason of poor attendance of students. Speaking at the dharna State general secretary of the student body B. Rajagopal stated that the Government had decided to close and abandon 515 schools in the district citing poor turnout of students. Deteriorating literacy
The measure would further deteriorate the literacy rate in the district, which was already lagging behind in the aspect. He condemned the decision and said it would deny elementary education to several remote areas, and the poor there would always remain illiterates. The hasty decision would also plunge the future of the poor of the area concerned into darkness forever. Protect education
The decision would further increase the illiteracy rate in the district and it was like a bolt from the blue as the students of poor families had been struggling hard to continue education in the wake of severe drought conditions for the last three years. He demanded the Government to fill all teacher post vacancies and continue all schools to protect education as a right ensured by the Constitution. Later, TNSF leaders Bhaskar, Veera, Narayanaswamy and others submitted a memorandum to DEO Abdul Hameed.
