Udhagamandalam: A large portion of the compound wall of the sub-jail atop the jail hill here collapsed on Thursday.
Stating that incessant rains had caused the damage, the Nilgiris Collector Santosh K. Misra told The Hindu that none was injured.
Pointing out that the wall was many decades old, Mr. Misra said it had been constructed with a mixture lime, mortar and jaggery.
Parts of the wall which had been affected by the collapse would also be brought down.
As soon as the collapse was reported the number of guards at the sub-jail was increased and arrangements made to shift undertrials and convicts to the Coonoor sub-jail. There are 22 prisoners in the jail.
The Sub-Divisional Officer, Public Works Department, A.R.K. Prabhu who inspected the damage said the collapsed portion was about 12 metres wide and six metres high. It would be repaired as early as possible. Such an incident was taking place for the first time at the jail.
