Presidential poll: Bhim Singh seeks ‘conscience’ vote

Panthers Party chief says Shekhawat is better choice ‘ideologically’

HYDERABAD: Bhim Singh, Chairman, Panthers Party of Jammu and Kashmir, has sought a “conscience” vote by members of the electoral college in the Presidential election and said Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat deserved to be elected on this count.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, Mr. Singh said he was going round the country along with a couple of MLAs of his party to mobilise support for Mr. Shekhawat as he was a better candidate “ideologically”. Mr. Singh was satisfied with his interaction with MPs and MLAs in the State where he hoped a large chunk of voters belonging to the Congress would defy the party directive and cast their vote in favour of Mr. Shekhawat.

Mr. Singh also had a meeting with Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu and a telephonic talk with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Mr. Naidu would participate in a meeting of the United National Progressive Alliance at Delhi on Saturday to chalk out the strategy of the alliance for the election, he added. The Panthers Party chief felt it would have been in the interest of Ms. Patil if she withdrew from the race after allegations were levelled against her. She chose to run for the election despite the court rejecting the anticipatory bail for her husband in a criminal case.
