Naxal incidents: all angles to be probed

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: With the State witnessing three major incidents relating to naxalism in the last five years, the ‘Q’ Branch is set to investigate various angles including funding for the organisation and nexus, if any, the members had with their counterparts in other States.

A comprehensive probe will be done to cover all aspects, a ‘Q’ Branch officer said. Soon after the arrest of Sundaramoorthy, along with Karthi and Easwaran on July 9, senior police officers had said that one angle that would be gone into was whether Sundaramoorthy had links with naxalites outside Tamil Nadu.

The police say interrogation of Sundaramoorthy, the State secretary of the CPI (Maoist), may provide useful information about the activities of the members including the Oothangarai and Murugan Malai arms training camps planned by the naxalites.

After the Oothangarai (Dharmapuri district) encounter in 2002 (Sundaramoorthy is wanted in the case), the police were jolted by the detection of manufacture of rocket launchers and spares at seven engineering units located at Padi, Korattur and Mogappair, on Chennai’s outskirts. An Andhra Pradesh naxalite cadre Thota Kumara Swamy alias Tech Madhu of Nellore was said to have organised the manufacture of the illegal components in Chennai.

The police are trying to establish the origin of the arms seized following the arrest of three persons soon after the detection of the arms training camp planned by the outfit at Murugan Malai. The police in various naxalite-infested States have been intimated about the seizures.
