Tributes paid to Carnatic vocalist

Special Correspondent

Tirupati chapter of Mani Krishnaswamy Foundation opened

OCCASION TO REMEMBER: N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, being felicitated by T. K. Seshadri, trustee of the Tirupati chapter of Dr. Mani Krishnaswamy Foundation, on the occasion of its inauguration in Tirupati on Thursday.

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati Chapter of the Mani Krishnaswamy Foundation was inaugurated here on Thursday on the Thyagaraja Trust premises by N. Murali, Managing Director of The Hindu, who is also the President of the Madras Music Academy .

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Murali showered encomiums on the late Carnatic singer Mani Krishnaswamy for what he described as her pristine pure and traditional rendition and said it was gratifying to note that she honed her musical skills under the tutelage of stalwarts like ‘Tiger’ Varadachari, Mysore Vasudevachar and Budalur Krishnamurthi Sasthrigal.

Acknowledging the conferment of the Madras Music Academy’s prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi title on the late Mani Krishnaswamy,

Mr. Murali said that the inauguration of the Foundation’s Andhra Pradesh Chapter at Tirupati would augur well for further promotion of the cause of Carnatic music and fine arts in the temple city with Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams providing the needed impetus.

Mr. Murali struck a note of optimism that the long cherished wish of the Thyagaraja Trust to have a permanent auditorium of its own would not remain a distant dream if only the TTD, known for its resources and munificence, had a will.

P. Obul Reddy, Chennai industrialist, who is closely associated with the Tirupati Thyagaraja Trust, in his address, paid rich tributes to the quality of Mani Krishnaswamy’s musical prowess representing the lofty traditions.

Mr. Reddy in his address, which was read out in his absence at the function, expressed concern over the different shapes and standards the concerts at present were taking and said that there could not be any justification whatsoever for a ‘free-for-all’ in classical music.

M. Krishnaswamy, Chairman of the Thyagaraja Trust, who instituted the Foundation to perpetuate the memory of his wife, said that the proceeds of the trust would be utilised to provide financial assistance to deserving students to learn Carnatic music.

Earlier T.K. Seshadri, trustee of the Tirupati chapter of Dr. Mani Krishnaswamy Foundation, recalled how Vedantha Desika’s slokas from Dayasathakam rendered by Mani Krishnaswamy would be reverberating on the Tirumala hills daily.

Group rendition

K.V. Ranganathan, Secretary of the Thyagaraja Trust, welcomed the delegates.

The programme concluded with a group rendition of Thyagaraja’s ‘Pancharathna’ kritis.
