CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi president G.K. Mani on Thursday urged the Government to create a fund to provide educational loans for students belonging to the poor and the middle class. Leading a demonstration in Chennai as part of the State-wide agitation of the party’s students’ wing, Mr Mani said there were similar arrangements in Karnataka and Maharashtra where liberal financial assistance was given to students from the Backward Classes/Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes. Despite Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s assertion on the loan scheme, the assistance was not easily available to students. As higher education was broadly in the domain of the private sector, the students from economically weaker sections of society found it difficult to join the courses in view of high cost of education and inadequate financial support. The situation called for correction, Mr. Mani said.
