Police suspect fake currency racket

Counterfeit notes seized from Kanhangad thrice this week; hawala lobby suspected

KASARAGOD: The seizure of counterfeit currency notes from Kanhangad three times this week has given rise to apprehensions that a large number of fake notes are in circulation in Kasaragod district.

The police suspect the hawala lobby, which has very strong presence in the district, to be involved in the circulation of the fake notes.

The first seizure of the fake currency was made on Tuesday when Aboobacker, 39, a madrasa teacher, was arrested by the Hosdurg police for trying to deposit fake currency notes at the Hosdurg Service Cooperative Bank.

Following his arrest, the police conducted a raid on a madrasa at Thay Beach and seized fake currency notes valued at Rs.25,000.

On Thursday, Usman, 68, a resident of Hosdurg beach, was arrested when he was trying to deposit fake currency at the office of the Life Insurance Corporation at Kanhangad.

On Friday, Beefathima, a native of Kallumchira, Hosdurg, reached the Hosdurg police station with Rs.3,500 which she said was loaned to her by a neighbour, Nouphal.

She went to the police when she became suspicious about the authenticity of the notes.

The police found that the notes were fake. Though they tried to nab Nouphal, he went absconding.

Earlier, natives of Kasaragod had been arrested at the Kozhikode and Mumbai airports with fake currency and illegal money.

The police suspect the fake notes to be printed outside the country, possibly in a neighbouring country.
