Education aid for weavers’ wards

KARUR: A sum of Rs. 6.9 lakh has been allotted under the Siksha Sahayog Yojana during the current year for aiding studies of the wards of weavers in Karur district, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh.
Speaking after inspecting a handloom shed of a weaver belonging to Sachidananda Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society at Thanneerpalli near Kulithalai, Mr. Venkatesh said that children studying between standards IX and XII and wards of weavers enlisted under the Mahatma Gandhi Pungar Bima Yojana were eligible for educational aid of Rs. 1,200 per annum.
Every quarter
A sum of Rs. 300 would be released every quarter.
A sum of Rs. 6.9 lakh has been allotted for the current year and would be disbursed to the 683 identified beneficiaries soon, he added.
Insurance premium
Moreover, the Government was paying the life insurance premium of Rs. 130 per annum on behalf of the beneficiary weaver. Under the Mahatma Gandhi Pungar Bima Yojana, a total of 4,784 members have been enlisted.
It included 2,679 members from the cooperative fold and 2,105 weavers from private units.
It has been recommended to the Handlooms Commissioner that the legal heirs of 16 members, who died of natural causes and two others who died in accidents, could be given a sum assured of Rs. 9.6 lakh.
The amount would be received and disbursed shortly, Mr. Venkatesh said.
