Plea to scrap VAT on vessels

Puducherry: The Puducherry Vessels Merchants Association has called upon the administration to scrap the Value Added Tax now imposed at 4 per cent.

A resolution adopted at the general council meeting of the association recently pointed out that adoption of the VAT was affecting the merchants and consumers. Hitherto, a total exemption was given for the vessels from sales tax.

Since basic metals were procured from other States, Central Sales Tax was imposed at 3 per cent in addition to the VAT.
