JNU students call off strike

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The indefinite hunger strike by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union was called off on Thursday after an agreement was reached between the office-bearers and the administration.

Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya has agreed to reconsider the punishment awarded to the students -- for the February 19 incident in which Registrar Avais Ahmad was illegally confined in his staff car for more than six hours -- on receiving individual letters of regret with an appeal from the students concerned to enable them to register by August 14.

Prof. Bhattacharya met the students on Thursday morning and expressed concern over their health.

“The successful conclusion of our agitation once again proves that all issues in JNU can only be resolved through a process of dialogue. We consider it our ‘half victory’ because we will achieve complete victory only when the students can get themselves registered in time,” said JNUSU president Dhananjay Tripathi.
