Dharna against delay in distribution of ration cards

Staff Correspondent

‘Poor being put to hardship due to unit system’

‘Government dilly-dallying over distribution of ration cards’

DAVANGERE: The Davangere district unit of the Youth Congress has criticised the delay in distribution of ration cards and BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards. It also deplored the increase in bus fares, which it said was detrimental to middle class and lower middle class people.

Protesting against these issues, Youth Congress workers staged dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, it said that when the Congress was in power, it had distributed a minimum of 28 kg of rice, seven kg of wheat and seven litres of kerosene. But the present Government, which curtailed the foodgrains to ration cardholders had introduced the unscientific unit system.

As a result, poor and middle class people, who were dependent on ration cards to lead life, were put to lot of hardship, it said.

The Youth Congress said that the Government had been dilly-dallying over the distribution of ration cards under the garb of survey of beneficiaries and it alleged that the Government had spent over a year to conduct a survey and prepare a list of beneficiaries.

The memorandum said that the Transport Minister had claimed that State road transport corporations had earned crores of rupees of profit on the one hand and increased bus fares on the other.
