Belgaum: The polling for the election of president, general secretary and other office-bearers of Belgaum Bar Association for 2007-09 witnessed enthusiastic outcome and concluded in a peaceful manner here on Friday. At the end of the day, 921 of the 1,125 electorates exercised their franchise, accounting for 81.86 per cent polling. Nandi Arati B. was declared elected unopposed for the one-member woman candidate managing committee. Polling, which was held for the posts of president, one general secretary, two vice-presidents, one joint secretary, five managing committee members and one woman candidate managing committee, commenced at 11 a.m. It picked pace in the afternoon. Polling ended by 5 p.m. Counting was taken up at 6 p.m. Two groups were formed to complete the process of counting expeditiously, Returning Officer L.K. Gurav told The Hindu. According to sources in the association, the fight for the post of association president was between the incumbent S.S. Kivadsannavar and Manglekar Vinay B., where the former is trying for a “hat-trick”. Sources said Mr. Kivadsannavar was not obliging to the requests of both senior and young members of the association for a change in the leadership as he had already served two terms spanning over four years. He had also served as association vice-president for a term just before being elected its president for the first time in 2003. But, Mr. Kivadsannavar, who belongs to the Lingayat community and is Kannada-speaking, has decided to try his luck once again. The apparent reluctance of Mr. Kivadsannavar has resulted in the emergence of a “consensus” in favour of Mr. Manglekar, a Marathi-speaking lawyer who belongs to the Maratha community. Thus, the sources said, the contest for the post of association president was apparently between Mr. Kivadsannavar and Mr. Manglekar, although three others were also in the fray. The other contestants were V.M. Angadi, Bendigeri Sainath C. and Hiremath Gurudev A. Polling for the post of general secretary was equally interesting. The serious contenders included Gavali Dhanaraj R. who had served for a single term in the past, Majagi C.T. and Patil S.K. (Linganmath). Deshpande Ramesh B., Suldal Ramakant L. and Tarihal Shamsundar B. were the other candidates in the fray. For the two posts of vice-presidents, eight candidates were in the fray — Bagewadi Channabasappa B., Gorpade A.B., Hugar Ashok S., Kerimath B.V., Patil L.V., Shinappagol V.A., Totiger Ravindra Ningappa and Yakkundi Veeranna B.
