BIJAPUR: Leader of the Opposition in the zilla panchayat Panchappa Kalburgi on Thursday alleged that illegal sand mining was going on unabated in the Bhima riverbed with the tacit blessings of officials. Addressing a press conference, he said the KDP meetings decided at least two times that height restriction frames be fixed on bridge cum barrages across the Bhima that forms natural border between Karnataka and Maharashtra in the north of Bijapur district. These structures had become transit point for illegally mined sands being smuggled out to Maharashtra. Even after eight months, the frames had not been fixed. He said that the contractors had been violating conditions with regard to maintaining ecology of the river system, and area restrictions. — Staff Correspondent
