A spate of burglaries has been reported from suburban Ramanattukara, writes Biju Govind
The city police have decided to intensify night patrolling in Ramanattukara on the outskirts of Kozhikode city following a spate of burglaries in recent times in the town and adjoining regions. As many as 13 shops at various places in the city were looted on Wednesday night. According to estimates, cash and goods valued at more than Rs. 2 lakh were stolen from these commercial establishments. The police said burglaries were reported from an electronic service centre, stationery store and a gift centre on Farook College Road. Thieves also broke into two pharmaceuticals shops, a fancy centre, an Ayurvedic shop, furniture go-down, and stationery store near the Juma Masjid and a hair salon on the Airport Road. The shutters of all the shops that were burgled were cut open using a cutter. The locks were also destroyed. The Feroke police have registered a case. Fingerprint experts also inspected these shops. The area comes under the limits of the Feroke police station attached to the Nallalam circle. The police said the absence of street lights and rains have been favourable to thieves. Ramanattukara region, bordering Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, is within the limits of the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner. Incidentally, it is alleged that the police aid post at Ramanattukara, which has been lying unused for a long time, has become a den of anti-social elements. The aid post is situated in the middle of the National Highway and State Highway. It was constructed with the aim of solving traffic congestion as well as helping the local police curtail robberies on the highways. With the aid post left unused, police personnel from Kozhikode city have to reach Ramanattukara to man traffic on the highways. The absence of traffic police at Ramanattukara town has also resulted in traffic snarls at the major junction. Vehicles passing through the Airport Road usually violate one-way rule resulting in a number of accidents.
