Ex-VC of AU dead

VISAKHAPATNAM: Former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University Maddi Gopalakrishna Reddy died here on Friday. He was 74 and is survived by three sons and a daughter. He suffered a heart attack and died in sleep around 6 a.m. Son of the first Municipal Chairman of the erstwhile Visakhapatnam Municipality, Maddi Pattabhirami Reddy, Gopalakrishna Reddy was a graduate in economics and law. He did his Ph. D in economics and practised law for sometime before joining Andhra University as Deputy Registrar.

He subsequently became the Registrar and continued to serve in that position for 25 years. He was the second person in India to serve as the Registrar of a university for such a long period. He served as V-C of Andhra University for two terms between 1990 and 1997. He was also in-charge VC for a year.
