YSR asks Mary, Padmaja to quit

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Incensed over the ruckus created by them at Tirupati on Thursday, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked the Andhra Pradesh State Mahila Commission Chairperson Mary Ravindranath and member Padmaja Reddy to step down from their posts.

Dr. Reddy reportedly gave a dressing down to Ms. Ravindranath for her behaviour before asking her to resign when she met him here on Friday. “What nonsense is this? You are there to serve the interests of and protect the dignity of women. We should be proud of our women, but you have damaged the reputation of the Women’s Commission,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying.

Taking serious exception to the trading of charges by the chairperson and the member in full view of the media, he said the Government could not tolerate such gross indiscipline by persons holding high positions. He said both of them had crossed all limits through their altercation at the Sri Padmavathi Mahila University where they had gone to inquire into the alleged bad behaviour of staff members with the Vice-Chancellor.

While Ms. Reddy accused the chairperson for not informing her about the press conference, the latter burst into tears and accused the member of frequently harassing her.

The Chief Minister said his Government attached top priority to welfare and development of women and wanted the Commission to work with seriousness and discipline.
