Rig Veda in World Register

Rajesh Nair

PUDUCHERRY: Thirty manuscripts of the ancient Hindu text Rig Veda, dating from 1800 BC to 1500 BC, have been included in the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, a collection of documentary heritage of exceptional value, as the latest entry from the country, according to Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Director of the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM).

The Rig Veda manuscripts of Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute along with the Sharada Script were the two nominations from India.

The Rig Veda manuscripts were one among the 38 heritage documents from different countries to make it to the World Register last month, she said.

However, the Sharada script could not make it to the register, she told The Hindu.

She was here to launch the online catalogue of 1,144 paper Devanagiri transcripts, collected at the manuscript library of the French Institute of Pondicherry.

The online catalogue, a joint effort by the Institute and the French School of Asian Studies, would be available in the U.S.-based Muktabodha Indological Research Institute online digital library website at htttp://muktalib.org from next week, according to Dominic Goodall, Head of the Pondicherry center of the French School of Asian Studies.

Ms. Gopalakrishnan said the survey conducted across the country to identify and document manuscripts would be completed by next year. Already, 22 State Governments have completed the survey.

About 25 lakh manuscript collections have been documented through the survey of which 10 lakh have been put on the web, she said.
