dated July 14, 1957: Offensive statues

The Government of India have suggested to the State Governments that all statues of foreigners which are “offensive to Indian sentiment” may be removed before August 15, 1957. Disclosing this in the Madras Legislative Assembly on July 13, Mr. C. Subramaniam, Finance Minister, said this step was suggested in connection with the commemoration of the centenary of the first Indian War of Independence, during August, this year. On the larger question of removing all statues of foreigners from public places in the city, the State Government were in correspondence with the Central Government. As such, there was no proposal to remove all the statues before August 15.
