dated July 14, 1957: District Boards to go

The Madras Government propose to entrust the functions now discharged by District Boards to smaller local bodies comprising unions of panchayats and at the district level to replace the present Boards by advisory bodies, under the proposed scheme of reform of local administration. As the term of the District Boards will expire on October 31, the work of the bodies will be transferred, as an interim arrangement, to District Collectors to be appointed as Special Officers for this purpose.
