Letters to the Editor
The 2007 Presidential race has seen the worst kind of mud-slinging, unprecedented in the history of the Indian republic. Gone are the days when morality and collective leadership were on political parties’ agenda. Cherished values are things of the past, with sycophancy and vote-bank politics ruining the Indian democracy and republic. Ushadevi Suddapalli & S.B. Rao, Ruwi, Muscat Here is an appeal to the Independent Bhairon Singh Shekhawat: you must be aware of how the campaign has degenerated into mud-slinging unheard of in earlier elections to the highest office. Without going into who is responsible for that, I appeal to you as a citizen of India to step down from the august office of Vice-President. Only then can the high office be protected from getting smeared with mud. The Constitution may permit a person occupying the Vice-President’s office to contest the Presidential elections but political decency demands otherwise. Hari Krishna, Jaipur Despite all the BJP mud-slinging, the UPA candidate Pratibha Patil is bound to win. The kind of allegations levelled against her can be made against anyone who has been in politics for 40 years. One wonders how L.K. Advani will henceforth lead a delegation to the Rashtrapati Bhavan demanding the dismissal of a ‘tainted’ Minister. Will he not be pleading with one against whom he unleashed a tirade? N. Kunju, New Delhi
