Wijetilak advances to quarterfinals

Arvind Bhat bowed out in the first round

Bangalore: India’s Ajit Wijetilak entered the quarterfinals of the Victoria international badminton championship with a hard fought 17-21, 21-18, 21-18 win over Stephen Wojcikiewcz of Canada at Melourne on Friday, according to information reaching here.

The other Indian contender Arvind Bhat bowed out in the first round losing to Ervin Kehlhover of France 19-21,15-21.

Nine-wicket win

K.M. Aiyappa’s 114 and incisive spells by Arjun Shetty (six for 72) and N. Manish (five for 51) in the first and second innings respectively helped Jawahar SC (1) defeat Jayanagar Colts by nine wickets in a KSCA Group I first division league match here recently. Chasing 73 in its second innings, Jawahar SC scored the winning runs in 11 overs.

Baldwin drubs Sarla

Baldwin Boys HS pounded Sarla Birla Academy 6-1 in a league encounter of the Fr. Eric Vaz Memorial inter-school hockey tournament here on Friday. Both teams have already progressed into the semifinals.

Baldwin’s skipper Anup rattled the Sarla Birla Defence and scored twice (6th and 9th) in quick succession. Sarla Birla’s Bharath slotted home its first penalty corner in the 12th minute after which Baldwin continued its scoring spree. Malem (18th) took the score to 3-1 at half time.

After the break Anup scored another two goals after the break (37th and 53rd) while Kennet (46th) slotted one in the interim for Baldwin.

Host St. Joseph’s BHS will play Sarla Birla Academy in the first semifinal on Saturday while Baldwin will clash with St. Germain on Monday.
