IOB, Indian Bank in last four

Tirunelveli: Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank and last year’s runner-up, Indian Bank, Chennai, entered the semifinals with identical 4-1 wins over Tamil Nadu State Police and host Jothi Sports Club in the seventh annual Kandasamy memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament at Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai on Friday. Southern Railway, Chennai, lost 2-1 to SAI, Chennai, while Thirunagar Hockey Club, Madurai, went down fighting to Reserve Bank, Chennai 3-2 in the other quarterfinals.

St. Mary’s in last four

St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Dindigul, entered the semifinals in the boys’ section defeating Government HSS, Batlagundu, 2-0 in the district-level inter-school football tournament organised by DDFA and Rotary Club of Dindigul West at NMM HSS ground, Dindigul, on Friday.

Host Theni scored 101 runs for the loss of three wickets in 43 overs at stumps, after dismissing Madurai for 129 runs in its first innings, on the opening day of two-day match (second stage) in the TNCA inter-district under-15 cricket tournament at TKSTT Institute ground, Koduvilarpatti, on Friday.

The scores: Madurai 129 in 48 overs (Ateer Fazal 33, Aussian 52, Arun Kanna three for 38) vs. Theni 101 for three in 43 overs (Arun Kanna 37).
Semifinalists spotted

St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Chennai, Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, Sri Krishna College, Coimbatore, and NGM College, Pollachi, qualified for the semifinals from their respective pools in men’s section while St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Chennai, Womens Christian College, Nagercoil, PSGR Krishnammal College, Coimbatore, and St. Mary’s College, Tuticorin, made the semifinals in women’s section in the State-level inter-collegiate invitation volleyball tournament under floodlights, organised by YMCA and Weldone Club, at Pope’s College ground, Sawyerpuram near Tuticorin on Thursday.

R. Sivakumar of Ellisnagar Table Tennis Coaching Academy won the intermediate singles title in the Madurai District open table tennis tournament at Madurai, on Thursday.

Tiruchi struggles

P.S. Nirmal Kumar’s seven-wicket haul could not prevent Tiruvannamalai from scoring 309 against Tiruchi on the opening day of the TNCA inter-district under-15 (second stage) cricket tournament at Tiruchi on Friday.
