Tamil people are disillusioned, says LTTE

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Amid incidents of sporadic violence in the north, the LTTE has claimed that “Tamil people are disillusioned” with the Donor Co-Chairs for not exerting pressure on Colombo to address the fundamental humanitarian issues that are critically affecting their day-to-day lives.

According to TamilNet, the LTTE conveyed this message to Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar during a meeting at the LTTE Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi. The envoy, after obtaining clearance from the Government, visited the LTTE headquarters on a two-day “farewell’ visit on Wednesday and Thursday. He apprised the Government of the details of his visit. “Denial of basic humanitarian needs requires equal and urgent attention, besides addressing selected Human Rights violations by the Sri Lankan state, Thamilchelvan further told Mr. Brattskar, according to LTTE’s Peace Secretariat officials,” TamilNet said.

Key issues

The Tigers delegation complained that the Co-Chairs had “failed” to give attention to key issues affecting the Tamil people, including, continued closure of A9 highway, the resettlement of tens of thousands of internally displaced refugees in the East, and the establishment of a new High Security Zones designed to “evict Tamils from their traditional areas”.

The LTTE said the aid received by the Sri Lankan state is being spent on projects that support the military infrastructure.

Separately, the Sri Lanka Government Peace Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) said on Friday that it had established a steering group to look at “Confidence Building Measures through Constitutional Reform”, to suggest areas in which consensus might be relatively easily obtained, as opposed to the more complex question of units of devolution and their powers.
