MADRID: Spanish international midfielder Cesc Fabregas said on Friday that he would be sticking with Premiership side Arsenal despite the interest shown in him by Real Madrid. After the departure of Thierry Henry (for Barcelona) I can’t leave the team in the lurch,” Fabregas told Radio Marca. The 20-year-old reportedly telephoned Real president Ramon Calderon and sports director Predrag Mijatovic on Thursday to tell them that he intends staying in London. Real was reported to be ready to pay 30 million euros ($41 million) for Fabregas. Arsene Wenger convinced Fabregas to turn down another approach from Real Madrid to stay and help Arsenal, the player’s agent said. “Wenger met with him on Thursday and convinced him to stay. It’s like a father and son relationship,” Joseba Diaz told Spanish television station Antena 3. “We would like to thank Real for the interest they have shown. President Ramon Calderon and sports director Predrag Mijatovic have been very good to us and it is the second time Real have shown an interest in the player,” he added. “Maybe they will get lucky the third time.” — Agencies
