More facilities for passengers at railway station demanded

BERHAMPUR: Activists of the Ganjam district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) held demonstration in front of the city railway station demanding better facilities for passengers.

Led by State president of the DYFI Judhisthira Behera and its Ganjam unit president Basanta Nanda, the DYFI members organised a rally that started from the Tata Benz square and reached the railway station.

A protest meeting was organised in front of the railway station.

The leaders of DYFI held discussions with the station manager of East Coast railways posted in Berhampur regarding the problems faced by passengers and other demands.

Memo submitted

They also handed over a memorandum addressed to the Union Railway Minister with a charter of 12 demands. The DYFI leaders alleged that although the Berhampur station happens to be a major revenue generator for the railways in Orissa yet the railway authorities are showing step-motherly attitude towards the passengers of this region.

Their demands included extra booking counters and special booking counter for women at Berhampur station, opening of reservation counters at Huma, Berhampur university campus, Digapahandi, Aska, Bhanjanagar, establishment of a passenger halt near industrial estate of the city, more general compartments in Konark Express, Puri-Okha Express, Puri-Ahmedabad Express, completion of Lanjipalli overbridge and special trains from Berhampur to New Delhi and Mumbai.

Their other demands included extension of Nuapara-Gunupur train line up to Therubali and implementation of the proposed Gopalpur-Raipur railway track.
