NEW DELHI: Integrated traffic management would be introduced in the Capital in a time-bound manner and there will be strict enforcement to remove blockages from carriageways for ensuring optimum lane capacity, Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna said at a high-level meeting on traffic management convened at Raj Niwas on Friday. Mr. Khanna said a road safety audit holds the key to accident prevention mechanism and was needed to study the challenges posed by traffic congestion. He said state-of-the-art techniques would be adopted to optimise traffic management and announced that a centralised traffic coordination group would be set up at the Delhi Development Authority headquarters for according clearance of engineering design collectively by all the civic agencies concerned. Similar traffic cells would also be set up by the three municipal bodies – MCD , NDMC and Public Works Department. During the meeting, Professor Raman Patel of New York Polytechnic, who has built the Traffic Management Centre for New York City, made an audio-visual presentation on “Development of a Framework for Integrated Traffic Management”. Dr. Patel said a clear transport policy, capacity building and institutional coordination were the pillars of scientific management of traffic. Other suggestions included implementation of a centralised vehicle tracking system, strict licensing regime and creation of a central database.
