BANGALORE: Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy told the Legislative Assembly on Friday that officials of the department had been asked to conduct an inquiry into the alleged molestation of minor girls at an orphanage in Krishna Layout in Bangalore. Replying to G.V. Sriram Reddy (CPI-M) during zero hour, the Minister said the Hulimavu police had arrested the accused, Ramesh, who had been running the orphanage in two rented houses since 2001. Seventy girls aged between six and 15 were staying in the orphanage. A majority of the girls were from Bijapur and Gulbarga districts. Ramesh had collected donations from the public to run the orphanage, Mr. Kumaraswamy said. Preliminary reports indicated that Ramesh had not sexually abused girls. Doctors had been asked to confirm whether the girls had been sexually abused or not, he said. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Govind M. Karjol told V. Somanna that the department had received 6,20,935 applications seeking ration cards meant for families living below the poverty line in Bangalore. Temple entry
Minister for Fisheries and Muzrai B. Nagaraja Shetty said all women, including Dalit women, were allowed to perform puja in all temples in the State. No temple had prohibited puja by women, he told S.S. Patil (Congress). Mr. Patil refuted the statement made by Mr. Shetty and said a majority of temples were not allowing Dalit women to perform puja.
