Support sought for Shekhawat

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: A delegation of Dalit Panthers headed by its president, Bhim Singh, MP, called on the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda here on Friday and appealed to him to support Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the presidential election.

Addressing a press conference later, Mr. Singh said the delegation had appealed to Mr. Gowda to help protect the unity and integrity of the nation by supporting the candidature of Mr. Shekhawat.

Nr. Singh described the Congress-supported candidate, Pratibha Patil, as a controversial person.

He said the delegation had also told Mr. Gowda that the Congress had backstabbed him by withdrawing support to the government headed by him at the Centre.

The delegation had met various leaders in other States, including the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, to seek their support for Mr. Shekhawat, he said.
