City can set store by flow into reservoirs

Rain in catchment areas raises hopes

In the last two days, three reservoirs recorded 55 mm

of rain.

CHENNAI: The latest spell of rain in Chennai’s catchment areas has gladdened the city water managers as this has resulted in the much-needed flow into the reservoirs, though in a modest way. Consequently, the combined storage of the reservoirs catering to the city needs went up by 30 million cubic feet (mcft) in the 24-hour-period that ended at 6 a.m. on Friday.

As on date, the combined storage of the Red Hills, Cholavaram, Satyamurti Sagar in Poondi and Chembarampakkam reservoirs stood at 3,513 mcft. Red Hills recorded 255 cubic feet per second (cusecs); Cholavaram – 58 cusecs; Poondi – 162 cusecs and Chembarampakkam – 244 cusecs. The amounts of rainfall recorded by the four reservoirs on Friday morning after the 24-hour-period were 45 mm, 49 mm, 12 mm and 25 mm respectively.

Though the addition to the storage was marginal, the managers are relieved because the rainfall in the catchment areas had so far been negligible this year. Till the end of June, the rainfall recorded by the reservoirs (excluding Chembarampakkam) was 105 mm whereas it was 220 mm during the corresponding period in 2006.

In the last two days, the three reservoirs recorded 55 mm. The rainspell also helps to recharge the groundwater table, lessening pressure to some extent on the public water supply system.

The authorities are confident of maintaining the present level of 640 million litres a day (MLD) in the coming months as Krishna water is also expected to be available in a month.
