L-G reviews Delhi’s disaster management preparation

Staff Reporter

‘Builders, architects and engineers should follow safety codes’

NEW DELHI: Reviewing the initiatives and preparedness measures undertaken by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) at Raj Niwas, Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna on Thursday cautioned that a natural or man-made disaster would have a “tremendous impact” in the city and so there was a strong need to remain ready with immediate response, rehabilitation and subsequent reconstruction phase plans.

Mr. Khanna said it was also imperative that builders, architects and engineers follow the building safety codes as applicable. He directed Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam to ensure that these provisions find a place in the MCD Act and building by-laws in a time-bound manner.

Expressing satisfaction over the work done in terms of preparation of disaster management plans at different levels, Mr. Khanna suggested that all plans be put to practice and checked for efficiency and effective implementation.

Mr. Khanna also asked GOC Northern Command K.J.S. Oberoi to initiate mock disaster-response drills in any of the nine districts and monitor the actual ground level response. He said this would facilitate independent audit of the preparedness and deficiencies of the plan put in place by different authorities.
