CPI(M) for all-party meet to discuss cooperative poll norms

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government to convene a meeting of leaders of the National and State parties, recognised by the Election Commission, to evolve norms for conducting cooperative elections in a free and fair manner.

The secretariat of the State unit of the CPI (M) said in a resolution that basic democratic norms such as allowing all those who wanted to contest to file nominations, enabling voters to cast their ballot and ensuring counting of votes without any irregularities, were violated by the ruling party activists and officers concerned in the recent cooperative poll.

This had resulted in the cancellation of the elections, it pointed out.

However, the party welcomed the State Government’s decision to cancel all the cooperative elections owing to “various irregularities.”

The CPI (M)’s State secretariat also called for steps such as setting up of a separate commission to conduct cooperative elections, issuing identity cards to members of cooperatives and appointing responsible personnel for poll duty to ensure the conduct of the cooperative elections in a democratic manner shortly.

The party demanded a judicial probe into the attack on members of 53 Dalit families in Appurasapuramputhur village in Nagapattinam taluk last month. It also decided to stage dharna at all the district headquarters on July 24 to highlight the demands of these families for house sites and compensation. The CPI (M) urged the State Government to provide compensation to the victims of police firing in Vilampatti village in Dindigul district on May 29.
