Maoist leader files Habeas corpus plea

CHENNAI: V. Sundaramoorthy, CPI (Maoist) leader, who was arrested by the Q Branch in Tirupur on July 10, has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court, alleging that the whereabouts of two other persons taken into cust ody along with him on July 8 were not yet known.

In an affidavit filed before a Division Bench, comprising Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra and Justice R. Banumathi, Mr. Sundaramoorthy said Arur Kumaran alias Gopalakrishnan and Suresh were picked up along with him by the police at 11.30 p.m. in Tirupur on July 8. While he was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody on July 10, the other two were yet to be produced in court.

Liberty sought

He prayed for a direction to produce Kumaran and Suresh in court, and set them at liberty from illegal custody.

The Bench directed the Additional Public Prosecutor to get instructions with regard to the other two detenus.
