On women’s entry to Sabarimala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Travancore Devaswom Board has decided to evolve a consensus on the much-debated issue of giving permission for women to enter the Sabarimala temple.

Board president C.K. Guptan told The Hindu here that the board would file an affidavit in the High Court only after making an effort to evolve a consensus on the issue. The approach of the Government towards the issue would also be taken into account while formulating the position in the affidavit to be filed by the Devaswom in the High Court within a month. Mr. Guptan said the board would hold widespread consultations on the issue. The opinion of the Tantri Samajam, women, Hindu organisations would be given due consideration while framing the Devaswom’s position on the issue.

Pointing out that the issue was a very sensitive problem, Mr Guptan said: “We want to adopt a mature and balanced approach towards this issue”.

Mr. Guptan said the board also decided to set up a medical college and a super-specialty hospital attached to this. These facilities would be located either in Kollam or Pathanamthitta districts depending on the availability of space.

He said the super specialty hospital would have 500 beds and would be of international standards. The medical college would work as a self-financing institution.
