KOLKATA: The Indian women’s team, consisting of Chekrovolu Swuro, L. Bombayla Devi and Dola Banerjee, booked three Beijing Olympic quota places on Friday at the 44th world championship at Leipzig in Germany. They got the better of the Russian Federation by 206-198 points. However, the men’s team, comprising Rahul Banerjee, Somai Murmu and Tarundeep Rai, lost to Italy by 212 (25)-212 (26) points. India men will have another chance to pick up the Olympic quota places at the Asian championship in November in China. Earlier, India’s campaign in the individual recurve bow event in the ongoing World archery championship at Leipzig came to an end in the third round. The six-member team, set out to earn India as many Olympic quota places as possible, failed miserably on Thursday. India will try and secure berths to Beijing in the team championship where the women take on Russia and the men will clash with Italy in the opening round. Among the six Indians in fray in the individual recurve section, only Rahul Banerjee and Chekrovolu Swuro had good chances of securing a berth each on form, thanks to their higher ranking in the FITA qualification. This in turn pitted them against lower ranked opponents in their knockout clusters. Yet, the two failed to rise to the occasion and bowed out in the second round. After beating his Armenian rival in the first round, the 14th ranked Banerjee went down to 51st ranked Cheng Sian Chu 108-110 points. Interestingly, the Malaysian went on to secure the Olympic berth. Chekrovolu, ranked 18th, fell to 47th placed Elena Tonetta of Italy 105-108. Laishram Bombayla Devi of Railways was the surprise packet by making it to the third round where she might be in with a chance to clinch a quota place. The results: Individual recurve men (ranking in brackets), 2nd round: (51) Cheng Sian Chu (Mas) bt (14) Rahul Banerjee 110-108; (11) Kim Ha-Neul (Aus) bt (54) Somai Murmu 110-108; (1) Lee Chang-Hwan (Kor) bt (64) Tarundeep Rai 112-108. 1st round: Banerjee bt (115) Andranik Shahnazaryan (Arm) 108-99; Murmu bt (75) Thomas Aubert (Fra) 103-100; Rai bt (65) Martin Bulir (Cze) 104-102. Women, 3rd round: (1) Park Sung-Hyun (Kor) bt (32) L. Bombayla Devi 107-95. 2nd round: Bombayla bt (33) Karen Scavotto (US) 105-103; (47) Elena Tonetta (Ita) bt (18) Chekrovolu Swuro 108-105. 1st round: Bombayla bt (97) Magali Faulton (Esp) 104-100; Chekrovolu bt (111) Szilvia Bekasine Molnar (Hun) 103-99; (79) Simona Bancila (Rom) bt (50) Dola Banerjee 104 (8)-104 (7).
