BANGALORE: Hewleet-Packard and Intel have introduced here HP ProLiant DL 180 servers, developed for small and medium businesses (SMBs) across Asia, with China and India as the largest potential markets. HP has its India Centre of Excellence in Bangalore. Tony Parkinson, Vice-President and General Manager, HP Asia-Pacific and Japan, told reporters here on Thursday at the global launch of the server, that it was their second region-specific product. “We have sold over one million ProLiant servers since 2003 and carefully studied the needs of the potential users; they require scalability to match rapid business growth, cost-effective products and technology that can be handled without an in-house IT manager”. While most Indian businesses in the small and medium segments preferred ‘rack type’ servers, HP will continue to market a tower-based variant as well, he added. HP at present has a 29.6 per cent share of the server market in the region, including China. “The new server variants have been tested and found to reduce the cost per 100 users by 29 per cent, a payback on investment in six months and more dependable with 77 per cent average increase in uptime,” Mr. Parkinson said. Intel South Asia Sales Director, R. Ravichandran, said his company was now working on multi-core architecture-based chips with almost four times the capability of the chips used in most servers in the market. HP India’s Country Manager, Rajesh Dhar, said, the new servers would be priced below Rs. 1 lakh in India.
