BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday came to the rescue of a Kannada-medium school and directed the State Government not to go ahead with the notice of closure it had served on the institution. The court ordered issue of notices to the State and adjourned further hearing on the petition. The court was dealing with a petition by Jnana Jyoti Education Society of Chennarayapatna in Hassan district which had challenged a notice of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Hassan, on June 26, 2007 asking the school not to admit students this year. The notice claimed that the school had violated the policy on medium of instruction and that it was imparting education in English. The school contested the claim and said it was teaching in Kannada. It also undertook to teach in Kannada for students of the first standard from this year. Justice B.S. Patil stayed the notice and adjourned further hearing on the petition. Compensation
Justice K.L. Manjunath on Thursday hiked compensation in a motor vehicle case from Rs. 11 lakh to Rs. 26 lakh. Mr. Justice Manjunath noted that a native of Andhra Pradesh who met with an accident in Bidar was a Class 1 contractor and that he had come to Bidar in connection with a work order relating to the Department of Telephones. When he was killed in a road accident involving a lorry, he had on hand work orders for construction projects worth more than Rs. 1.20 crore. The contractor too had paid lakhs of rupees as income tax and Mr. Justice Manjunath took into account his income before raising the compensation claims.
