BERHAMPUR: Without waiting for the city planners or the municipality, a group of youths have swung into action to recharge the Ramlingam tank in the city. This tank has been drying up in the last few years as it is not getting recharged with rainwater. Without regular cleaning, the dried-up areas of the tank have turned into a garbage dump. This tank is more of a reservoir as it has no groundwater source. More than a decade back it was connected to an irrigation canal . But with urbanisation the canal has vanished from the city map. Only rainfall is not able to recharge the tank. But areas around the tank usually get flooded with rainwater during continuous rains. Members of the Kappu Street Youth Association took up an initiative to channel this rainwater into the tank. They have dug a deep channel near Biju Patnaik Kalyan Mandap that leads into the tank. Basudev and Satish, two members of the group said their aim is to get the rainwater deposited on the city high school road and adjoining areas reach the Ramlingam tank during continuous rains. Their measure would help release of water from the Government girls’ high school campus in the area which gets flooded . Till now a legal dispute continues over the ownership and maintenance of the Ramlingam between a family trust and the local municipality. Due to it the authorities are unable to take major measures to renovate the tank.
