Acid attack accused seeks bail

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The State has opposed a bail petition by a small-scale industrialist of Sullia who is a prime accused in an acid attack case against the former president of the Sullia Bar Association and his advocate wife.

According to the public prosecutor, B.K. Usman, a beedi manufacturer and contractor employing more than 1,000 people under him, splashed acid on Venkappa Gowda, former Sullia Bar Association president and his wife Champa when they were standing in front of their office at Beeramangala on February 23.

The public prosecutor said Mr. Gowda had sustained burns on the left hand, arm, chest, cheek, left thigh and hand. It said Mr. Gowda was treated in a hospital from February 23 to April 6.

The prosecutor said a plastic container used by Usman and others for transporting the acid had been recovered. He said there were acid stains on the motorcycle used by Usman and two others for transporting the acid.

He said the motive for the crime was the popularity of Mr. Gowda and the large number of cases that were coming to him. Moreover, Usman did not want Mr. Gowda to appear against him in court.

The counsel submitted that if released on bail, Usman could not only tamper with the witnesses but also harm Mr. Gowda and his wife. He said that Usman had threatened, through his friends, Mr. Gowda asking him to drop the charges against him (Usman).

He said Usman had filed a bail plea before the Sullia Junior Magistrate First Class and this had been rejected.

The court adjourned further hearing on the case.
