Plea to hike quota for STs as per population

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Andhra Pradesh Girijana Samakhya has observed that a majority of tribals in the State were still living as nomads without any basic amenities even 60 years after independence. Proper implementation of schemes meant for their development is required for their uplift, the samakhya leader said.

Speaking at the samakhya meeting here on Saturday, Devarakonda legislator Ravindra Nayak alleged that the lands belonging to tribals were in the occupation of non-tribals. Such lands should be reclaimed by the Government and be distributed among the tribals.

The population of Scheduled Tribes in the State had gone up to 7 per cent in the State’s population as 2001 Census and the reservation should also be hiked accordingly. Thousands of tribals had died of viral fever in agency areas last year and the sale of children out of poverty was also on, he stated.

District secretary of CPI M.V. Ramana said a script was required to be developed for tribals as their languages had no script so far. APGS leaders Govind Naik, Gopal Naik, Bheema Naik and Nagaraju Naik also spoke.
