Congress MLA resigns from Delhi Jal Board post

Staff Reporter

In protest against “inaction” in rape case

He was the Board’s

Vice-Chairman

He says accused still in service

NEW DELHI: Congress MLA Bhisham Sharma has resigned from the post of Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board in protest against alleged inaction by the Delhi Government against four Jal Board engineers who had been booked for criminally assaulting a 25-year-old woman in October 2006.

Mr. Sharma said he had sent his resignation to Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh. The resignation was in protest against “no action” being taken against the Jal Board officials booked for gang-rape. Mr. Sharma alleged that despite the filing of an FIR against the accused, the Jal Board and the Government had made no efforts to either suspend or arrest them. He said it was shameful that the accused officials continued to remain in office.

The victim, an executive with a private firm that did contract work for the Jal Board, had accused the four, of whom one retired as Superintending Engineer, of criminally assaulting her on October 8 last year.

Victim “blackmailed”

In her complaint, she said the accused had gained entry into her house on the pretext of giving her official documents pertaining to a job in the water utility. She further alleged that the accused had used a drug-laced pastry to sedate her and thereafter raped her. She also alleged that a CD of the act was made in order to blackmail her subsequently.
