Kolkata: With a promise not to repeat the mistakes of the past concerning environmental issues, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee inaugurated the celebration of the Annual Forest Week here on Saturday. “There has to be co-existence of humans as well as the wildlife found in the forests,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said. “There cannot be a constant conflict between the animals and humans,” he said, referring to the recent spate of deaths of wild animals on coming into contact with man-made agencies such as railway tracks. The target was to raise the forest area in West Bengal from 13 to 18 per cent through social forestry and other methods, Mr. Bhattacharjee said. The students must be made aware of the deep crisis facing the world in the form of global warming and climate change, which, in the future, might affect India, especially the Sunderbans area of West Bengal, he said.
